See You At El Famous?
The trend for restaurant fundraisers to cover a whole day of operations is new and greatly appreciated! The folks at El Famous are always cheerful and serve fabulous food. Mention Feral Fixers and we receive 20% of your tab! My favorite is the chicken nachos, others swear by their burritos! Any time between 10:30am – 10pm, 256 Roosevelt Rd, Lombard. I’m going to be there about 1pm and hope to see you there!

How Old is Too Old for Food?
Unopened dry food can be good for a year after “best by” date.
Unopened canned food can be good for up to two years after “best by” date.
From "The Scoop on Pet Food Expiration Dates":
“Most pet foods, both dry and canned, come with a “best by” date, but this doesn’t mean that the food is bad after that date. The “best by” date indicates the date after which the manufacturer cannot guarantee all the nutrients in the pet food. Nutritionists formulate pet food to give your pet the nutrients they need, and their calculations about how long vitamins, ingredients, and minerals last before they degrade, go into the estimate of when the food will no longer be able to provide all the nutrients they claim it will (the “best by” date).”
Environmental Effects of Flea Treatments
If it ain’t one thing… Just because flea treatments have so much approval it is unfortunate that it does not mean that all of them are safe for all creatures. In this article, Fipronil and imidacloprid are specifically mentioned, there are many flea preventatives on the market. We have found that good nutrition can have the greatest effect on cats being able to fend off parasites of any sort. The study was funded by a bird organization and that may impact results as happens with any studies but it is definitely something to think about as we head for warmer weather and the possibility of fleas affecting our ferals.
A Few More
1/17 – GEAH – 1 friendly male with an injured ear. Rocky will soon be adoptable.
1/30 – DCAS – 1 friendly, 15 ferals, 7 male, 9 female. Friendly was a kitten on his own who showed up at a caretaker’s door and now will have a home with that same caretaker. Some of the ferals were from a location that is being demolished, most of the rest from a trucking company – bringing us to 97 cats from that one location. These were special circumstances – we still will not do volume until the beginning of March, expected overnight temps are below freezing until then. A video of the cats that made the trip!
Total: January and year-to-date 18, since 2007 – 15,752.
As Many As Possible As Soon As Possible
Working Cat Locations Needed
As mentioned above, neighborhoods get demolished, resulting in needing more Working Cat locations. We would much rather return them to the area they know but it isn’t always possible. Here’s a link to more information – fabulous to see that we are following the consensus on how to do Working Cats!
Frosty Claws Recap
What a wonderful crowd that braved the freezing temps! Not too crowded, everyone so very positive and supportive. It is very rewarding to see how happy the attendees were, getting to see each other again, meet new friends and enjoying the prizes they won! We appreciate you all so much!
