Although it was rather windy and the temperature was a bit brisk initially, the sun hung in there and it turned out to be an ideal day for the adoption event at Two Bostons Adopt-A-Rama in Naperville on Saturday, 10/5. This is an outdoor tent event in the parking lot of the store. 16 dog and cat rescues participated in the event - all with many wonderful animals looking for loving homes. Attendance was good and we had many guests stop by to meet our cat and kittens.
Safely nestled in crates in my van, the cat and kittens seemed to enjoy the cool breeze and sunshine. Thankfully, no one got overheated. Many seemed quite fascinated by all of the activity, guests and dogs (in the distance) and happily interacted with our guests. A couple other cat rescues liked our approach of keeping the cats in cages/playpens in their vehicles and followed suit.
10 kittens (Kahlua, Kaspar, Karlee, Carney, Penny, Felipe, Ferris, Puka Shell, Latham & Kenny) and 1 adult (Simon) were the stars of our show. Kahlua, Kaspar and Karlee entertained our guests with their playful antics in their crate in the tailgate. Carney and Penny had the other tailgate position. Carney enjoyed watching all of the activity and engaging in gentle play with the feather wand, while protecting his foster sister, Penny, who was not as excited by all of the commotion. Simon was happy to meet everyone who stopped by the side door of the van, while showing off his handsome good looks and chatty personality. Latham and Kenny also greeted our guests from this same side door until it became nap time and they decided to cuddle up together. Felipe, Ferris and Puka Shell held the greeter position by the other side door and happily met everyone, while safely huddled together in their big cat bed.
We had a steady stream of guests, a few former adopters and a few potential adopters. One application was completed which is under review and several cards were distributed. We also raffled off a nice cat carrier, cat bed, toys and treats to a lucky winner.
A pre-approved adopter from Elmhurst came to the event with her daughter to meet all of the kittens. They narrowed down their choices to Kaspar, Kahlua and Karlee. A subsequent visit was scheduled in the foster home on Sunday when her son could also come, and they decided on Kaspar. Kaspar will have a 1.5 yr old male cat as a playmate in their home.
Many thanks to the volunteers and fosters who made this event a success - Bernie, Candy, Sara, Laura B, Marge & Ray, Cheri and Amanda. Everyone kept a careful eye on the cats & kittens in the van while enthusiastically engaging with our guests. Thanks to Bernie, Candy and Sara, set-up and clean-up of the tent, tables and crates was quick and efficient. Special thanks to Cheri and Debbie for transporting Cheri's and Amanda's fosters to the event.
Thanks also for all of the other valuable contributions to this event - to Candy for the photography & videography during the event; to Connie, Stephanie and Ted for promoting the event on our Facebook page and web site; to Debbie and Mike for the on-going updates to the Adoptable Cats & Kittens board and binder; to Sara for doing all of the laundry since I was without a dryer; to Sara for coordinating our lunch run.
Thanks especially to Two Bostons on 75th St in Naperville for hosting this event and for their generous donation of canned food.
In addition to Kaspar's adoption following the event, Starsky & Starbuck went home with a great couple in Arlington Heights in the week since our last adoption event.
We have 2 events scheduled for the end of October and early November - thanks to Steve for help with handling the scheduling:
- Saturday, 10/19, PetSmart at 1550 Butterfield Rd. in Downers Grove, from 11am-3pm.
- Saturday, 11/9, PetSmart at 63 Rice Lake Square in Wheaton, from 11am-3pm. This is the last PetSmart National Adoption Weekend of the year.
Hope to see you there!
Thanks,
Sue
