Catching up here...

Over the past week, Feral Fixers has made three more trips to the PAWS-Chicago Spay/Neuter clinic to get cats spayed/neutered.

Last Sunday, we brought in a single feral to PAWS to be fixed. Feral Fixers director Kurt picked up the cat from Tammy's and brought it to PAWS in the morning and then, in the afternoon, picked up the cat from PAWS and brought it back to Tammy's for recovery. Thanks Kurt!

Last Thursday, we brought in 55 cats to PAWS to be fixed. 28 of them were Friendly Ferals (all of them kittens now old enough for surgery) while the other 27 were ferals. Super-volunteer Charli helped me pick up the cats from Tammy's in the morning and bring them to PAWS (Thanks Charli!) while super-volunteer Stacy helped me pick up the cats from PAWS in the evening and bring them back to Tammy's (Thanks Stacy!). And, as usual, super-volunteer Judy was at Tammy's in the morning and the afternoon helping out with everything - Thanks Judy! One very sad note this day - one of the 'friendly feral' kittens died during surgery. With the thousands and thousands of cats that we've brought to PAWS, I think this is the third, or maybe fourth time this has happened. There is no information yet as to why this cat didn't make it. PAWS did a blood draw to do a full round of tests and will have a necropsy performed to try and find out why. When I arrived at PAWS in the afternoon to pick up the cats, the people there (especially the veterinarian) were very upset that this had happened. It's very unfortunate, of course, but these cats that we bring into PAWS are so often sick and/or have hidden conditions dictated by the environment they were born and brought up in. So, in total, 54 cats were fixed this day. One other note for the day was that PAWS performed 126 spay/neuter surgeries this day, tying a clinic record. Amazing, just amazing, but it sure made for a late evening. Somewhere, I do have the count of the number of male cats vs female cats done, but I can't find it. However, I do remember that it was mostly males on this trip...

And today, I brought in seven more cats to PAWS to be fixed. One was a friendly feral while the other six were ferals. One of the ferals turns out to have been already spayed, so six cats were fixed today.

The one feral from last Sunday was a "July cat", so we wound up finishing July with a total of 139 cats. The 54 + 6 cats done last Thursday and today means that we have now done 60 cats for August. So far this year, we have had 658 cats fixed and overall, the count stands at 5,391.
