Yesterday, Thursday, marked another milestone in the accomplishments of Feral Fixers. Our 8,000th cat was spayed/neutered at the PAWS-Chicago Spay/Neuter clinic as part of a batch of 23 cats brought there by Feral Fixers volunteers. Feral Fixers president Tammy gives us the scoop:

23 cats made the trip to PAWS - 4 ferals and 19 friendlies.

Cathi & Charli made the AM trip

Cathi & Debbie made the PM trip

One friendly female was deemed too snuffly for surgery.

There were 13 males and 9 females who did have surgery.

Along with our 8000th cat, this brings us to 22 for September and for the month, 730 for the year and 8,008 since we began back in 2007."

Thank you to super-volunteers Cathi, Charli, Cathi (again) and Debbie for doing transport and thank you to Cathi and Jenny (Jenny Nahrwold, clinic supervisor at PAWS) for taking all of the pictures (available on our Flickr page).

8,000 cats - wow! As Tammy said "Who'da thunk it?" When a few of us got together on a "dark and stormy night" in the summer of 2007 to found Feral Fixers, we had no idea that this is where we would be today.

It would be wonderful to say "We're done - thanks, everyone, for your help!", but of course we're not there yet. We still have a lot of cats to go, but the difference we're making is shown by the numbers, especially at DuPage County Animal Care & Control where they haven't had to euthanize a cat for space reasons in several years. In addition to all of the feral cat issues addressed by Feral Fixers and the ever-increasing number of cats adopted out by Feral Fixers, we've also built a community of feral cat caretakers, cat lovers and volunteers who are united in their belief that every cat deserves a home and a good life.

There are so many people to say "Thank You" to. To all the volunteers, feral cat caretakers and fosters, we say "THANK YOU - We couldn't have done it without you!" To the awesomely wonderful people at PAWS, the fabulous organization that has spayed/neutered at least 99% of our cats, we say "THANK YOU - We couldn't have done it without you!" To the people at Glen Ellyn Animal Hospital, who take care of our "special needs" cats at a very favorable rate, we say "THANK YOU - We couldn't do it without you! To the officers and directors of Feral Fixers, we say "THANK YOU - We couldn't have done it without you!" To Tammy's two "right hand men", Sue Lee and Judy Walker, we say "THANK YOU - We couldn't have done it with you!" And to all of our donors and supporters, we say "THANK YOU - We couldn't have done it without you!

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't make special mention of our president, Tammy McAuley. As anyone who has ever dealt with Feral Fixers knows, Tammy is the driving force in this effort and the one who keeps it all together. I am in awe of what she has accomplished and very much look forward to being a part of the future evolution of Feral Fixers. Well done Tammy - we all owe you a huge vote of thanks!

On to 9,000!
