It was a gorgeous, warm, spring-like day on Saturday, 3/5, for our adoption event at the Wheaton PetSmart, as part of PetSmart National Adoption Week. 5 cats/kittens were the stars of our show (Izzy, Kookie, Livingston, Mitsubishi, Nellie).
The event started on a high note as 2 adoptions were completed:
- Nellie was adopted by a young man in Downers Grove. He had lived with roommate's cats previously and was now looking for a companion of his own. He had met and found a connection with Nellie on Thursday, equipped his home with cat gear on Friday, and came to complete the adoption on Saturday.
- Izzy was adopted by a young couple from Westmont. They both grew up with cats and are now ready for a kitten of their own. Izzy should get lots of attention as her new mom works from home.
Things quieted down for a while after that until another surge of visitors arrived between 1-2pm. Kookie drew lots of attention and visits were conducted with both Livingston and Kookie. Shipman was also discussed as a possible option for one potential adopter. Follow-up is underway with 2 potential adopters who provided their contact information.
While adoptions slowed down in February as the majority of cats & kittens rescued in 2021 have found their forever homes, we completed 10 adoption since our last adoption event on 1/29:
Adults
- Frankie (Burt) - Adopted by his foster mom and rescuer in Schaumburg, after an initial adopter had to return Frankie due to allergies.
- Patty - Adopted by her foster mom in Elmhurst, who started fostering her in the fall of 2020 and bravely pursued an experimental treatment when Patty was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) in Jan 2021. After many months of treatment, Patty fully recovered and formed a lasting bond with her foster mom.
- Wesson - Adopted by a gal in Addison who recently lost her senior cat.
Kittens
- Bella (Thandie) - Adopted by a couple in Palatine who had adopted a similarly shy FIV+ Maine Coon mix male cat from us in 2016.
- Cookie - Adopted by a couple in Willowbrook who recently lost their prior cat.
- Dalton - Adopted by a gal in Chicago who has a 1 yr old male cat for Dalton to play with.
- Hilary - Adopted by her foster family in Bolingbrook as a companion for the other foster kitten they adopted last year.
- Inga - Adopted by a couple in St. Charles who has a 1 yr old female cat for Inga to hang out with.
- Lionel (Liona) - Adopted by her foster family in Naperville who recently lost their senior cat. Lionel has made friends with the brother/sister pair of kittens this family fostered and then adopted earlier in 2021, which has really helped her come out of her shell.
- Onyx - Adopted by a retired couple in Lombard who recently lost their prior cat and will have lots of time to spend with her.
Many thanks to the foster families who brought their kittens to this event (Agnes, Cheri, Chrystie, John, Olivia) and were able to stay during the event to interact with our guests and promote their fosters.
Many more thanks to the volunteers who made this event possible. Connie & Ted - For the excellent promotion of this event. Trista - For helping load up the van with the supplies for the event. Sara, Steve, Christy & Trista - for the efficient set-up & clean-up and help with adoption counseling and interacting with our guests. Sara - for taking the lead on adoption counseling, handling the lunch run and helping with the laundry. Steve - for the professional looking cage cards and banner stand that drew potential adopters to the back of the store where we were located.
We have <10 more wonderful cats & kittens rescued in 2021 who are awaiting their forever homes. We will be working hard via social media and on-line advertising to get them placed prior to the arrival of the 2022 spring kittens. No further adoption events are currently planned in March or April. If that changes, we will let you know.
Thanks,
Sue
